At last count, there were nearly 15 million refugees
worldwide. This figure does not include people who have
been internally displaced, who number at least another
21 million.
The top five refugee producing countries in 2001 were:
Afghanistan (4,500,000) Palestine (4,123,000); Burma (450,000);
Angola (445,000); and Sudan (44,000).
Women and children make up 80% of the world’s
refugees.
Of the 1,000,000 foreign persons admitted to the US
annually eligible for legal permanent resident status,
less than 10% are refugees.
Learn about conditions which produce refugees. A good place
to start is World Refugee Survey 2000, published
by the U.S.
Committee for Refugees.
