January 27, 2026. The federal operations in Minnesota and Maine show the extreme and lethal measures the federal government is taking to eliminate resistance to their power. Two humans, both U.S. citizens have now been fatally shot by an armed force acting with apparent impunity and in complete disregard of our Constitution, and tensions are on the rise.
These law enforcement methods are now national policy and will be a part of future operations. All refugees and immigrants should be considered at risk for arrest, detention, re-vetting, reinterviewing, and possibly deportation. The rights of refugees – as well as for immigrants and U.S. citizens -are now threatened everywhere.
Here are five (5) things that will help you prepare and increase your chances of staying safe.
The information below summarizes how recent federal immigration policy changes are affecting different groups as of Jan. 12, 2025. Some policies were issued without full procedural guidance, and impacts may continue to evolve.
To assist families who have concerns about immigration enforcement, particularly in regards to the possibility of the deportation or detainment of guardians and the impact that it could have on their children, the Connecticut Governor’s Office has developed a useful toolkit that people can utilize.

This app is available in 16 languages, primarily Asian languages. It has the ability to read your rights out loud to an ICE or law enforcement agent and send a message to an emergency contact. It has other resources as well such as the ability to look up a consulate and a sample family preparedness plan. Available for the Iphone, and will be ready for android phones soon.

In order to prevent food insecurity for all clients, IRIS’s operates a food pantry that distributes 2,000 pounds of nutritious food each week to over 200 refugee and immigrant households in the greater New Haven area.
A free “marketplace” offers all clients the chance to select additional linens, kitchen supplies, toys and books, and other household items.
The IRIS Food Pantry is located at 75 Hamilton ST, New Haven, CT 06511
It is open from 8:30-11:00am on Wednesdays.
